As if people with diabetes don’t already have enough to worry about, now two major drug manufacturers decided to raise the price of their insulin. The rise in price is just another way to increase profit for Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk, but for diabetics, the increase can be devastating and dangerous. Drug companies know that patients can’t just stop taking their medication. For people with type 1 diabetes not being able to afford their prescription is a matter of life and death.
Many patients are seeking alternative means of getting their insulin. Some are asking friends, family, and even strangers on social media for donations. When patients start rationing their insulin, they run the risk of developing irreversible complications. Basically, the makers of Humalog and Novalog think diabetics should choose between their vision and their mortgage.
Do drug manufacturers care about all the children that need their insulin? What is a parent going to do when they can’t stretch the money far enough? I guess there’s starvation. You could save a lot of money if you stop buying food.
30 million people in the U.S. alone are diabetic. Could you imagine if we could boycott these companies? Of course, that is not an option. Please don’t try. Never stop taking your medication without talking to your doctor, even if you cannot afford to continue. A hospital stay will likely cost you more.
What can we do about these price increases? How can we stop them from going higher?
